REACH is the Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 of the European Parliament concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals. It entered into force on June 1, 2007.

REACH applies to substances manufactured or imported into the EU. It includes substances on their own, in a preparation or in an article manufactured, imported, placed on the market or used. Therefore, those regulations not only impact the chemical industry but other sectors such as electronics, packaging, textiles and corrugated plastic products.

What does it stand for?

Step 1: Registration—substances manufactured or imported to the European Union must be registered by EU producers and importers with the European Chemical Agency (ECHA); non-EU businesses must depend on EU-based representative to submit the registrations on their behalf ;

Step 2: Evaluation— ECHA will examine the registration dossiers presented in terms of comprehensiveness and information specifications. ECHA will also evaluate an environmental/public health concern substance;

Step 3: Authorization— Listed Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) in Annex XIV shall not be permitted to be used, marketed or imported into the EU after a date to be set unless an authorisation has been given to the business;

Step 4: Restriction— REACH Annex XVII includes a list of all limited substances specifying which uses are limited or even prohibited;

Step 5: Communication in the supply chain— Information on the secure use of chemicals in the format of Safety Data Sheets or Chemical Safety Report must be conveyed up and down the supply chain. You can download Flutecorr’s Safety Data Sheet.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) maintains a Candidate List of 197 substances on their website. An end user must define all possible hazardous substances in their products and find out if they are on the list of Substances of Very High Concern. You can do this by testing your final product yourself or by requesting your providers to conduct tests.
